And the predator is…

February 20, 2011

We’ve identified the chicken killer! And by we, I mean Geoff. After heroically staying up ALL NIGHT in the chicken coop, Geoff determined the identity of the chicken killer, and it is…Colonel Mustard in the library with a candlestick! Just kidding. It is a mink. Unfortunately, Geoff was not able to assassinate the predator. He was able to put the mink on our Most Wanted List.

Currently, Maggie has taken over Geoff’s predator hunting duties. Geoff put the littlest laying hens in a chicken tractor and he put Maggie in the poultry house bay where Geoff spotted the mink. My hope is that Maggie enjoys a tasty midnight snack of mink.

Geoff spent the day getting some much needed rest and I spent the day catching up on some school work.

We made homemade pizza. We watched 60 Minutes. All in all it has been a very desirable Sunday.

Happy to learn that your predator has been identified. I have a couple of suggestions:

    1. I would not risk my dog’s life on an encounter. Mink are like the mongoose, they are extremely vicious.

    2. I suggest that you contact the local wildlife agencies before killing or capturing the animal. They might wish to life-trap it for relocation, wild mink are not really that plentiful so the agency might be willing to help.

    3. Finally, if no help is available, try to locate the ingress and place a steel trap baited with some raw chicken or other meat.

P.S. We enjoy your posting on the farm. We both grew up in the farming atmosphere.
